Comfort in Foods

The one thing that has cluttered my life more than anything else involves food. My lack of self-control and the resulting health frustrations have taken over my life on many occasions, costing time, money, and countless hours spent in places where only the sick should go.

Many of us turn to food when we’re angry, sad, lonely, bored, anxious, depressed, fearful, or a host of other emotions. We’ve never learned to control our feelings, especially in the midst of the more powerful ones we don’t understand.

If we call this kind of eating “emotional eating,” it will begin to make sense.

Eating gives us something to focus on besides the feelings. But then we choose foods that are bad for us — foods high in sugars and salt, low in quality proteins and fats. It is well known that the brain produces chemicals that make us high — the runner’s high for instance. Certain foods set off these chemicals too. They make you feel better even when your life is in a shambles.

Eating these types of foods, the ones that make us “high,” is addictive. This type of addiction is difficult to break, but it is possible. With alcohol or other drugs you can abstain completely. And you can stop everything related to them, including friends who do these things with you. But you can’t just stop eating.

Emotional eating usually includes an addiction to junk foods.

You can train yourself to make different choices about food. But these choices won’t happen when you’re trapped in a cycle of automatically reaching for addictive foods when you want to feel differently.

However, you can abstain from all junk foods. And many people have broken from this bondage by doing just that. If junk foods are not nearby, or if you’ve seriously chosen to deny yourself of all foods that are even slightly not perfect, you might just be successful. Many people have. Hermits, especially. But it’s hard to live a social life without being around junk foods, sweets, salty snacks, and other enticements.

Personally, I don’t believe the Creator of the universe, the One who made the bees that make honey and told us to eat it, means for us to live as hermits in a cave somewhere with no celebrations just because our particular culture has endorsed junk food. In fact, the Bible is full of celebrations we are commanded to observe.

So what is going on?

Instead of dealing with our feelings, we medicate with food to avoid them.

And instead of turning to God with our problems that cause these feelings, we turn to food.

That’s idolatry.

“Those who turn to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.” Jonah 2:8 NIV

A lot of people get grace and mercy confused. Here’s a short version of my favorite explanation:

You were driving too fast and are pulled over by the highway patrol. You were speeding, so you deserve a ticket. If you are given a warning, you just received mercy — you were forgiven and not punished for the crime you committed. However, if instead of a ticket, you were given $1000.00, then you’ve received grace.

Mercy is not receiving the punishment you deserved. Grace is getting a benefit you don’t deserve. We need both. (loosely taken from page 19 of Grace…The Power to Reign by Harold R. Eberle. http://www.worldcastministries.com/)

We attempt to control our feelings by eating. But once we start eating to control ourselves, we lose control of our eating.

We live a nightmare of food controlling us because we’ve given it power through the sin of idolatry.

We need mercy (not receiving the punishment we deserve) through forgiveness.

And we need grace (an undeserved blessing) to get out of this mess.

How do you stop?

The following is an abbreviated example of Terraforming (www.Terra4ming.com) used to help find the root of the problem and bring healing and freedom.

1) Ask the Lord to reveal the beginning of your eating problem.

I had several problems — I was a typical stick-skinny kid with multiple food allergies (undiagnosed) who was force-fed well beyond the point of pain because a lot of common foods made me nauseous. That was traumatic, and my response was anger, fear, bitterness, and attempts to escape the constant nagging to eat more.

The overeating began when my older sibling left home, which transferred the brunt of the family abuse onto me. At the same time my stomach issues got worse and I could no longer feel my stomach. I ate three to four times a normal amount of food at every meal and still didn’t feel like I had eaten. I was diagnosed with ulcers, but they did nothing back then to heal ulcers. They drugged me with Valium. I was in the tenth grade, had ulcers, was on three different drugs that altered the way I behaved, but nothing addressed my symptoms.

Since then I’ve noticed that in the beginning of a virus I tend to overeat because I can’t feel my stomach. Curious.

2) Forgive those parts of you that were left behind by the traumas.

First I forgave the young me that reacted in anger and bitterness when force fed and criticized for food behaviors. Then I moved on to forgive the teen-aged me who turned to food for comfort and couldn’t tell when she was full. And as I worked deeper into my past on a daily basis, I forgave a lot of abuse, neglect, abandonment, and betrayal that happened too.

3) Repent of the behavior.

The people who should have protected me were the ones I needed protection from. I repented of anger, hatred, denial, bitterness, judgment, fear, and wishing the deaths of those who tormented me. I also repented for the idolatry — turning to food for comfort instead of to God. And I repented for eating myself into frequent states of illness and disease, not to mention obesity.

4) Forgive those who trespassed against you.

I forgave my parents and siblings, and anyone looking on who didn’t see the truth and try to stop the abuse. And the doctors and nurses who made some bad decisions. And my grandparents who raised my mother to believe that forcing a child to eat is okay. And anyone else who contributed to or encouraged this sin against me. And I forgave my dad for allowing my mother to run everything in our family.

Then I prayed a sample prayer (Sample Prayer: Person) from www.Terra4ming.com on the “media” page. You can download the sample prayers and print them. It especially helped with taking authority over the situation.

5) Reset behaviors, get someone to help if needed.

I asked the Lord for guidance about future eating. I knew how to eat right, but I didn’t do it very often. It is sometimes best to stay away from entire groups of foods such as grains, sweets, dairy products, fast foods, or packaged snack foods for a set period of time and then test the water carefully to see if you’re ready to eat responsibly and without compulsion. Or sometimes it’s best to stop eating foods that are harmful for a longer period of time. There is a lot of information out there about “trigger foods” that may be helpful — the idea is that eating a specific class of foods (white flour products with cheese for instance) will set you off course into an eating binge. Explore why that happens — what memories come up when you think about macaroni and cheese?

Eating for health is quite a departure from living to eat.

It can take a few weeks to get used to it. I’d suggest making out a sample menu of healthy foods, with some back-ups in case you’re really hungry. But when you’re really hungry you’re probably burning fat.

It is also important to sit down to eat regular meals. If you graze all day, or eat while preparing foods, you’re not as aware and can frequently eat more than you want to. Put the food on the plate, determine if it’s the right balance of protein, fat, and carbohydrates and if the food quality is high. If it’s not, fix it before you begin eating. If you still feel hungry when you’re finished, stop and think a bit to see which food group you need more of or if you just underestimated your need for food at this meal.

Some people prefer their largest meal of the day for breakfast, others at mid-day. Most people who succeed at losing weight do NOT eat a large meal at the end of the day.

6) Don’t give in to fear, anger, cravings, or pity parties.

First I was afraid that I wouldn’t have enough food to eat. I had plenty of food in the house! Then I was afraid that I wouldn’t have the kind of foods I craved.

Cravings come in two forms — the good cravings that guide us into eating better, and the bad cravings that lead us to eat worse. More on Cravings.

I checked out the kitchen and decided that, too, was a lie. I had the right kind of foods ready to eat: apples on the table, carrots in the fridge, and plenty of other food. I was afraid of not being able to eat the foods I really liked. But I realized that when I was eating those foods they weren’t really that tasty. Then I was afraid that I would lose control and eat too much.

Be ready for the lies. Analyze them, find the truth, and stop believing the lies. Yes, you probably will go through a bit of detoxification. Yes, you’ll have more gas as your body cleans out. Yes, you’ll feel better. Yes, you’ll want to exercise more. Yes, the lies will continue for a while. Yes, you can argue with them. And sometimes those lies will give you insight into another part of you that needs to be dealt with. Start at #1 again to find the root and forgive, forgive, forgive.

7) Go and sin no more.

I had a dream many years ago. It was so graphic, so violent, and so demented that I remember it as if it had happened this morning. The message was clear: if we continue to turn to satan for comfort we’re giving him more power over us. He is our greatest enemy, the guy who wants to kill us! Why would we continue to do what he wants?

My prayer is that the God of all the universe would open your eyes so you would see what is really going on to keep you in bondage to food, or anything else.

Receive the Father’s love so you can break free and live the life He created you to live.

Maturity

def: the quality or state of being mature; especially : full development*

Mature: 1) based on slow careful consideration <a mature judgment>*

2) having attained a final or desired state <mature wine>*

Love

The kind of love I’m talking about is the kind that cares enough to do some pretty rash things. Mature love.

Mature love does not compromise because there are no longer two sides. Mature love has a common goal and therefore any conflicts can be resolved by getting back on track to the common goal.

Like stop feeding your favorite body fast foods and snack foods so you’ll function better.

Like exercise your favorite body so it feels better.

Like look the other way when you see something that is enticing but bad for your favorite body.

Yup, self love. The kind that cares enough for you so you’ll stop driving yourself into an early grave. Slowly. Painfully. Dead before your time.

That kind of love isn’t easy… we work ourselves to exhaustion, vegetate in front of an electronic tube, play games into the wee hours of the night, and eat and drink to distraction. Mind-altering behaviors to ease the pain of the life we’re living, or the body that isn’t functioning right.

And the arguments inside our heads! “Oh no, you shouldn’t drink that now, it’ll keep you awake too late!” “But I want it, it tastes so good!” “I can handle it!”

What we need is consensus. Agreement. A common goal. Find the voice inside you that cares about your health in a non-judgmental way and stay there. Tell all the other voices to shut up. With a common goal of health, you’re much better able to see your needs and to move toward health.

Start by forgiving yourself. Yeah, we’ve all put stuff into our mouths that was only suitable for a trash can. A sane person would not eat that kind of thing. That was then. We’re not going to live that way anymore.

Their end is destruction

their god is their belly

and they glory in their shame,

with minds set on earthly things.

Ephesians 3:18

“Earthly things” in the Bible aren’t trees and rocks and mountains and flowers — those are called “creation.” Earthly things means those enticing things that we know are wrong but we want to do them anyway. Things that harm us, either immediately, or in the long run. And it all begins in the mind.

Compromise does not bring unity. If part of you wants something special and the rest of you compromises with a “Well, just this once.” — it’s not gonna work. If the consensus is health, then find a healthy alternative. If you can’t think of one, google it: “healthy alternative to coffee.” Results: About 8,410,000 results (0.35 seconds).

My personal favorites:

  • fresh lemon juice, raw local honey, hot water, cayenne or paprika to taste
  • organic chai with raw milk
  • hot raw milk with maple syrup

Not all of these are good for everyone, but they’re hot, not overly destructive, and yummy! Some people can’t tolerate dairy products until they’re healthier. Use water, or try nut milks. Stay away from anything overly processed or decaffeinated. It takes a whole lot of chemicals to remove caffeine from things and those chemicals don’t leave with the caffeine.

Maturity is revealed in the choices we make every day. It’s not a destination. Maturity is not something we work toward, it’s what we’re doing right now. Stop worrying about yesterday or tomorrow. If you make the right choices now, the rest will come.

You’ll find yourself writing things like lemons and kale on your grocery list. You’ll reach for clean water to drink. You’ll buy real cranberry juice and sweeten it to taste with natural sweeteners like raw honey or maple syrup and add some lemon to give it sparkle. You’ll stop paying conglomerate food companies to poison you and your family. You’ll stop putting money into drink and snack machines. You’ll start wondering what all those center aisles in the grocery store are for but glad you don’t go there anymore.

And you’ll discover the glow of health. Because that’s what maturity does for a person. One day at a time.

It’s About Choice

I was watching a YouTube video the other day and almost everyone in it was of normal weight. There was one person who was maybe 40# overweight, and another about 20# over. These weren’t actors — but people fleeing a flood. I believe this was filmed in France, and yes, I am familiar with the French Paradox and how they are healthier than Americans yet consume more alcohol and fat. They also consume more fresh vegetables and by “fresh” they mean it came out of the ground this morning.

Then I was reading a book that said the French wouldn’t even consider having food at a meeting. And snacks were for children only. They eat meals, they enjoy meals, and they have less health problems than Americans who tend to focus on fast food, flavored drinks, and snack foods.

Here in America we bribe people to come to meetings with the promise of food. Contemporary worship services mean they provide the coffee and doughnuts. No need to eat breakfast before worshiping — choose your poison as you walk in the door.

Add to that the information that high fructose corn syrup is so bad for us but it’s pretty much in everything processed. And how sodas will make you gain weight even without any calories because of the way they change the pH of your body. Or the chemicals food scientists pump into man-made foods to make them bypass your natural inclination to either not eat them at all or to limit their consumption.

If you think about it, sugar and fat do not occur together in nature. The highest fat fruit is an avocado and they’re not all that sweet. Yet most of the enticing foods marketed are high in bad fats and sugar. Or bad fats and salt.

Did you know that fried foods in restaurants are frequently fried twice? The first time is in a factory so as to absorb a lot of fat, and then they are frozen and fried again at the restaurant to absorb even more fat. And of course they’re double or triple breaded with salt and sugars. Don’t forget the sauce — more bad fats, chemicals, sugars and salt.

Why do they do that? Because they pour tons of money into research to find out what makes the ordinary Joe lose control and eat more than he should. And the quicker they can get Joe addicted to their products the less likely he’ll switch to another. You could call it mind control — make Joe act out a behavior without a true choice. Like sinning on auto-pilot.

And they are very brand-specific. See McDonald’s, eat McDonald’s. See Starbucks, get Starbucks.

The point?

It’s about choice.

You can choose to eat for health, or you can choose to eat against health.

The Goal

What is the goal of eating better?

Is it pride and arrogance?

For some people it is. I’ve met a lot of people who love to rub your nose in how inferior your eating is compared to theirs.

Some other answers might be:

  • to get healthier
  • to live longer
  • to feel better
  • to stop the cravings
  • to look better

I’m going to suggest that BALANCE is the better answer — it takes in all of the good stuff above.

A balanced person isn’t overweight or underweight, doesn’t act out their anger, doesn’t live in fear, knows what good they can do on this planet, knows what harm they are capable of but they don’t do it, and they don’t focus on what goes into their mouths. They figure out what works, they don’t do what doesn’t work, and they make habits that still include variety.

In other words, a balanced person doesn’t spend a lot of time figuring out the perfect diet because they know the “perfect diet” doesn’t exist.

I’m not saying to avoid cruelty-free or organic foods. I’m all for them. But if you can’t get them, or if they’re still overpriced in your area, go for the better choices (you probably know what those are if you’ve had any contact with LeftLemon.com at all) and stop stressing over it.

To clarify:

a balanced meal has about 30% protein which could already be in your other foods because protein is in everything

a balanced meal has about 30% good oils which could already be in your other foods — like avocados, olives, etc.

a balanced meal has about 40% good quality carbohydrates like leafy greens, fresh veggies, raw fruits, etc.

Try balancing every meal with 30/30/40 for a few days and see if your body doesn’t feel better.

observations

A few things I’ve noticed while grocery shopping lately:

Storage Bags

“Ziploc” brand bags say clearly on the side or bottom: “Product not formulated with BPA” — I’m impressed. None of the other reclosable bags in the stores I frequent say anything about BPA. Makes me wonder…

Mayonnaise

Have you noticed most mayonnaise is now low-fat? The same old brands are now adding olive oil to their less-than-wonderful Canola and soy oil, but the first ingredient is water. They boldly advertise on the label, “New! Lower in fat!” That means they have to add other things, non-mayonnaisey things, to make it act like mayonnaise.

I’ve made mayonnaise for decades and it’s wonderful stuff! But it is a bunch of oil that has been thickened with eggs and lemon. The oil is good, the eggs are good, the lemon is good. The real thing is good. Add a bit of garlic and it’s perfect! But you don’t ever use water.

So if you’re trying to improve your diet, make your own (recipes abound online) using good eggs, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and olive oil. You’ll be amazed at how your body responds. And for what it’s worth, I don’t add mustard to my mayonnaise recipe.

You can still find good mayonnaise in some stores — try health food stores or store brands at your regular grocery store.

Or you can whip up a batch of oil and lemon juice (equal parts) and use that instead. That’s what submarine sandwiches are famous for.

“Ultra-Pasteurized”

Ever wondered what that meant?

Let’s begin with basic cooking 101. The higher the temperature when cooking proteins, the more degraded and toxic it becomes.

From wikipedia (emphasis added):

Pasteurization of milk … is the main reason for milk’s extended shelf life.

High-temperature, short-time (HTST) pasteurized milk typically has a refrigerated shelf life of two to three weeks.

Ultra-pasteurized milk can last much longer, sometimes two to three months….

Pasteurization typically uses temperatures below boiling, since at very high temperatures, casein micelles will irreversibly aggregate, or “curdle“.

In the HTST [normal, pasteurized milk] process, milk is heated to 161°F.

UHT [ultra-pasteurized] processing takes it to 275°F.

A lot of doctors and nutritionists believe the protein in ultra-pasteurized milk has a much higher link to colon cancer than just about anything else. Mercola’s website has this article.

Ultra-pasteurized milk proteins are added to health drinks and powders, and energy bars. Heated cheese is about the worst thing you can give your colon.

South Carolina has very liberal laws on raw milk. Most health food stores, especially the independent ones, carry raw milk. You can call them to find out their delivery schedule. Raw milk cannot be kept next to the regular milk in some counties, ask if you can’t find it. Resources.

And just about any good health food store carries cheese made from raw milk.

Morning Exercises

I’m sure you already know that exercise is important. And hopefully you’re doing something — walking, swimming, dancing…

This is Max’s morning routine. He also runs and works on people all day, so he gets a lot more exercise than this. But these are the basic movements that allow most of your body to be worked out in a quick, three minute routine. Below that are his two favorite stretching/patterning exercises.

You can print the Core Exercises Chart to remind you of the general routine once you’ve seen the video. It will print in light color on two sheets of paper.

This first video is less than ten minutes with directions.

The second video is the three minute routine.

And the two stretches that also help with patterning:

Dehydration

[Reminder: If you get this via facebook you need to sign up on the website for emails. My facebook page will be closed down this week.]
A couple of years ago Dr. Max was doing a seminar the evening of my morning appointment. I was a real mess with a lot of inflammation and outrageous thirst. At my appointment Dr. Max took away the bottle of water I was slurping and told me to drink nothing except lemon juice (no water at all) all day. We tested my hydration level and it was about 46% if memory serves correctly.
That night I went to the seminar and when he started talking about hydration he called me up front, checked my hydration level again, and told my story. I had only sipped lemon juice for the past twelve hours. No water of any kind, not even watery foods. Any time I felt thirsty I would sip the lemon juice. I had almost consumed the juice of one large lemon by that time.
My hydration levels had gone up 14 percentage points to 60%. I felt so much better, my hands and feet were no longer swollen, and my brain was clear. That really amazed me. And Dr. Max finally got the point across to me that water doesn’t hydrate a swollen body, it’s a pH issue.
Hydration should be up around 70%, and as that goes up, your fat % goes down. That doesn’t mean you should drink a lot more water though. Use lemon juice and drink about 16 – 20 ounces of water a day (2 cups) and your hydration level will go up, your skin will feel and look better, and your brain will work better. If you’re thirsty and already had 2 cups of water, drink lemon juice. And if you keep getting thirsty every day, use more lemon until you’re better.
The lemon allows water to go into your cells — instead of staying outside your cells.
Hydration means the cells have enough water.

Swelling means the water is stuck between the cells.

To summarize:

We want to find the ideal calorie intake for the direction we want to travel. Once you have gone through this you’ll understand why you need less food when you eat the right amount of oils. You’ll also have a good feel for how other foods affect you, and if you keep writing down how you feel each day you’ll also know how the right amount of calories make you feel.
We also want to get hydration right — water going into the cells to clean things up, not getting stuck between the cells.

If you eat a 60 – 80% raw, whole foods diet, you’ll only need about 20 ounces of water daily.

I know this could sound like a recipe for dehydration, but there are scales available that check hydration levels and body fat. Once you program a scale for your height and age, it tells your hydration percentage. You should use your scale at the same time each day. First thing in the morning after using the bathroom is usually the most accurate.

People who strive for 6-8 glasses of water per day usually show up as dehydrated because their body can’t figure out what to do with all that water. Adding lemon juice to your diet and cutting down on water intake makes the body able to get the fluids into the cells where they are needed.

The quality of your water is important too. Water with additions (city water or flavored waters), or leaching from plastic bottles could be a problem. You could install a reverse osmosis carbon filtered system into your kitchen cold water line, or you could go to a regularly tested natural spring and fill your own glass jars. Water should test at 5.5 – 6 pH.

If your body pH is too acid it will be difficult for you to hydrate properly. Saliva pH should be between 7.2 and 7.4.

Drinking with meals can slow down your digestion. A bit of lemon or water with lemon is okay, but iced drinks are the worst thing to drink with a meal. Get into the habit of chewing your food until it is liquefied.

You can only absorb water in the bowel. If your stomach isn’t acidified enough the lower valve won’t open and you just get water logged — you can hear the sloshing in your stomach. The hormones needed to empty the stomach properly and hydrate are related to the LL side – use more lemon.

Eating Out

I was in Butte, Montana recently, looking for a restaurant. We had just toured the amazing Mineral Museum — a place even normal people might appreciate for the beautiful displays of gems and minerals — and we were hungry. We asked around for a good place to eat and someone mentioned The Hummingbird Cafe, just a few blocks from the museum.

To say we had a pleasurable experience would be an understatement. Great food, great service, and a comfortable place to eat while the weather outside was frightful.

But more than that I was reminded of what makes a great dining experience when you’re trying to improve your health while still enjoying food, friends, and family.

Rule #1: pick a place that knows what “fresh” means

Wilted lettuce or canned guacamole just won’t improve your health like a pile of fresh alfalfa sprouts and a dollop of fresh hummus.

Rule #2: if they won’t work with you, go elsewhere

I don’t eat wheat. Nope, not ever. So when entering a sandwich shop the first thing I want to know is if the chef is having a bad day and can’t handle arranging sandwich ingredients on a plate. By the time you find that out, you already know if your waiter is going to be helpful.

Rule #3: comfort is…, well…, comforting

Is it too crowded? Too noisy? Too dark? Too anything?

A comfortable chair at a table with space to move around, good art on the walls, a bit of tasteful humor in the bathroom — these are all appreciated.

Rule #4: your turn — share your thoughts on finding good food when eating out

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The good…

Everyone has organisms living in their gut. It’s a good thing. Well, the good bacteria is a good thing. They help us digest our food, make vitamin B12, keep things clean down there, and even fight to keep their space free of the bad guys.

But sometimes we do things that harm the good bacteria. Like eat raw yeast dough, or eat bad food for a long time, or eat something that is rotten and we get food poisoning.

Then the good guys suffer and the bad guys take over and we get all sorts of problems.

the bad…

Once you’ve had food poisoning you can get it easier next time because your immune system doesn’t quite kill them all. In other words, once you get something bad living in your gut it can easily come back if you don’t take good care of yourself. And once the good guys are not having an enjoyable life, other bad bacteria, fungus and yeasts can come in and make things worse.

and the ugly…

Yup, parasites. Nope, you don’t want a photo. Take my word for it, they’re not fun to look at.

Colon Basics

A healthy person wakes up to urinate and move their bowels as soon as they get up. Then their bowels move within 2 hours of each meal. How can you have more bowel movements than meals in a day? Because what you eliminate is not what you eat.

If you are eating balanced and properly combined meals, your food is digested and used, with very little of it getting to the large bowel. Feces contain the waste products of bodily functions. The high amount of dead red blood cells make feces brown, and there are a lot of waste products from intestinal flora (good guys and bad) and parasites (ugly). Most of the organisms living inside your body have a 12 hour life cycle, and that die-off goes into the feces.

Parasites live in decaying matter. If the bowels are moving properly you won’t suffer from an overgrowth of yeast, which feeds on the excrement of worms. You also won’t have worms, which feed on the breakdown of bacteria that isn’t being eliminated.

It’s important to keep moving

To solve chronic constipation:

  • Eat 70-80% raw
  • Balance all meals with 30/30/40 balance.
  • Don’t eat animal products until the good guys are in control and your bowels move regularly.

Probiotics are not needed if you’re eating right. If you use them and you’re not eliminating, you’re adding to the problem with more things to live in there. Commercial probiotics cannot help if you are not moving.

To establish normal flora:

  • Eat raw
  • No animal products, especially dairy products
  • If in crisis, eat 100% raw for at least three days
  • Eat marinated vegetables

Flora comes from plant matter. You may also add cranberry (the berries, or the juice, not the sweetened juice) or coconut so the caprylic acid can help fight off yeast overgrowth.

And if you’re not digesting…

Then a lot of your food gets into your gut to feed the parasites. That’s not a good thing. They love undigested proteins so if you overeat protein foods or don’t digest what you’re eating (seeing food in your feces is one indicator, so are food allergies — it’s the undigested proteins that cause the problems), you need to add lemon to each meal to help you digest those foods.

Getting rid of the ugly

Parasites are more active around the full moon. Think about that one — like maybe the world is a little crazier at that time due to parasite activity. So that’s the best time to give them something that decreases their existence in your gut.

The Recipe:

  • 1 quart clean water
  • 2 tablespoons black walnut hull powder
  • (optional but very effective) 1 tablespoon clove powder
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar with the mother included (Bragg’s)

Bring the water to a boil, remove from heat, stir in the powder, cover with a lid, and let it rest five minutes. Then cool it to room temperature and add the vinegar. Put this into a jar for 3 or 4 days before you begin to use it, stored in the refrigerator.

You will begin drinking the tea three days before the full moon, take a break the day of the full moon for a total fast, then take the tea for three more days afterward. One-quarter of a cup with each meal.

That total fast in the middle really helps. And you can suck on whole cloves instead of adding them to your tea.

Recap:

The full moon is next Thursday. Make one quart of the tea now and let it grow in your fridge until Monday. Begin a second batch (per person) on Monday so you’ll have enough for the second half of the treatment.

  • Monday begin drinking 1/4 cup of the tea with each meal for three days.
  • Thursday fast from all food and drink.
  • Friday through Sunday drink the tea again with each meal.

Rescue Remedies:

One way to figure out what is going on in your gut is to poke your belly and notice any pain, bloating, or tightness. You can remedy according to the quadrant that is in distress. Remember, mid-line distress (along the center line up and down through the belly button) would be 4C’s. Also pain on both sides at the same time would be 4C’s.

Clutter too

I was wondering this morning how I managed to get rid of 56% of the stuff in my house when I’d been through two major (MAJOR!!!) purges in the past 14 months. The conclusion I came to is that I finally figured out a few things:
1) who I am
2) where I’m going
3) what I’ll need along the way

Giving up wheat and removing meat from my home released a lot of unnecessary items from my kitchen. And narrowing down my interests to those I am truly passionate about released items from other rooms. But my desk — where the vast majority of items were removed — found release from knowing who I am.

Finding out who I am came slowly, probably due to the autism thing. But the more I get to know God, the more I see why He made me, and how much better my life will be when my values completely align with His.

I’ve had to fight for health ever since I can remember

And it has eluded me in many ways. I have been told “It’s probably MS.” so many times that I finally forced the issue and demanded an official diagnosis. What I went through with that fiasco would make a great book. Mystery, suspense, near-death experiences, everyone making mistakes, and somehow surviving to tell about it. It turned me off from doctors for a long time.

At some point along this journey I realized vitamin and mineral supplements were doing more harm than good. So I quit.

Health has become a passion of mine

And just finding that passion has released a lot of clutter from my house. I don’t need things that create ill health. I don’t need things to keep me alive while I eat badly. And I no longer need those hundreds of pages of instructions to extract myself from whatever health problem I had gotten into this time.

Emotional baggage is clutter too

Forgiveness is priceless. Knowing that someone refused to forgive me for something I did is one of the worst hurts I’ve ever endured. But I played into that person’s desires to make me squirm until I forgave them for not forgiving me.
Forgiveness leads to less clutter in my head.

Getting rid of the excesses in my life…

Most of my life I’ve eaten excessively –  foods or drinks that were bad for me. Those had to be removed from my house until I was strong enough to refuse them. I needed to be able to relax in my own house and not have all those temptations around me. And once I found better health I didn’t want them anymore.

Getting rid of so much stuff from my house means I don’t have to take care of (steward) all the stuff that’s gone, but I also don’t have to clean it or clean around it!

The bottom line

The change I appreciated the most in the Clutterfat Challenge:

The view.
My entire house is pleasant to look at, with only a few exceptions that need more work. I love the look of wood floors with sunlight streaming in. And the thick knotty pine paneling in my den and kitchen.

And now I appreciate the stuff I do have.

(Thanks to D&T for allowing me to photograph the sunlight coming in from their awesome, snowy deck.)

Clutter 1

I recently participated in The Clutterfat Challenge, where I agreed to go through all of my “stuff” over a 30 day period and attempt to get rid of what wasn’t needed or wanted anymore.

William Morris – “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

They expected 50% of everyone’s stuff to accept the label of “clutter” and be moved out.

I, being special, hoped for considerably less.

Why am I so special? Because I’ve worked as a professional organizer for over two decades, because I just went through two major purges of clutter in the last 14 months, and because I like to think I keep a pretty sparse home anyway.

Pride goeth before the fall.messy desk

I counted all of my stuff to begin the challenge. I came up with 8748, but I guestimated the contents of my file drawers due to the overwhelming amount of stuff. I figured purging the file drawers would take the most out of my house, but I had no idea as to what awaited me during this thirty day challenge.

What does this have to do with restoring health through understanding — the LeftLemon.com motto — you might ask?

“When you find an excess, something is wrong.”

Trust me, I will tie this together…

I began this journey according to the directions, by downloading the three page worksheet, and walking into the bathroom to begin counting every object in there. I opened the first drawer and realized I wanted to get rid of about half the stuff in that drawer right now! No — I couldn’t! I had to count them.

To say I was angry, depressed, overwhelmed, and maybe even a bit furious during the two days it took me to count all the stuff in my house doesn’t quite describe the emotion I felt. It was horrible. But it was a huge learning experience.

The final statistics

My beginning total: 8748
My ending total: 3841
I got rid of 4907 items.
Percentage of stuff exited from my house: 56%.

Analysis, in case you’re interested:
Place where the most items were eliminated: my desk at 3580 less items, 71% less stuff.
Place that surprised me the most: kitchen at 621 less items, 43% less stuff.
Place that was the most fun: my closets and drawers — 321 less items, 60% less.
Place with the least clutterfat: the living room.
The hardest part: counting.

How did I get rid of 621 items from my kitchen?

By getting rid of items I would never need now that I’ve committed to a healthy lifestyle.

How about you? Where are the excesses in your life? What could you stand to get rid of? Would it bring you more peace and contentedness? Would it bring you better health?

4C’s problems

When you are having 4C problems, you have a lot of problems. It’s usually not just one thing, but a combination of long-term abuse. And you’ve probably done it to yourself.

If you don’t have a clue as to what a 4C problem is, please read the Left Lemon System page.

Typical 4C situation:

  • Most of your problem areas are on both sides of your body or midline (the red areas on the stickman chart)
  • Your body type is plum-shaped — big gut, skinny arms and legs, round face
  • You don’t eat enough dark green leafy veggies or bright red natural veggies and fruits
  • You crave coffee, chocolate, tea, or other brown things and stimulants
  • Your eating isn’t balanced according to  30/30/40
  • You have blood pressure issues
  • You have anxiety and lethargy — alternating between being really tired and really busy or anxious
  • You can’t focus on much of anything
  • You’re low in essential minerals and high in toxic metals
  • You tend to be swollen a lot
  • You tend to get kidney stones

To get out of this trap:

  • Get rid of stimulants and tannins (cinnamon, caffeine, coffee, colas, dark brown nuts and seeds, chocolate, tobacco)
  • Eat your greens — marinated is easier to digest
  • Also eat dark red pigmented foods — red bell peppers, berries, cranberries, cayenne, beets, raw tomatoes, paprika
  • Avoid artificial colors and dyes — in candy, chewing gum, drinks, processed foods
  • Deal with your emotional issues by forgiving

Conscious Forgiveness

Think about that for a few minutes…
Conscious Forgiveness
Every time you get disgusted with someone, especially with yourself, you are secreting the hormones that make your condition worse.
Every time you get frustrated with someone, especially yourself, you are secreting the hormones that make your condition worse.
And the list goes on… anger, rage, hatred, judging someone, condemnation, impatience, loathing…
Think of one incident. Figure out who was at fault.
I’m not saying to forget what happened and trust that person in that situation again. I’m not saying this person shouldn’t have to suffer the consequences of his actions from the authorities in his life. What I am saying is that you need to stop torturing yourself by holding all that anxiety and anger inside of you. You’re not harming him with your anger, you’re only harming you.

So how do you forgive someone?

First, don’t deny that it happened. Think about it for a minute. Roll around in the feelings of being betrayed, lied to, invaded, beaten, raped, humiliated, or whatever happened. Accept the fact that this happened. Feel the feelings.
Next you speak forgiveness. They did something horrible. We’ve all done horrible things that hurt people. Hopefully we all appreciate it when someone forgives us for something we did.
You don’t need to say it to that person unless you want to. What’s important is that you get that person out of your head so you’re not angry all the time. So say it out loud: “Person who hurt me, I forgive you!” Say it as many times as needed to get you to the place where you really believe it. Your feelings will follow your declarations.
Now move on to another person cluttering up your feelings. Do it every time you remember something you haven’t forgiven yet. Keep doing it. Every time you put your head on the pillow at night ask yourself who you need to forgive today. Your life will be so much lighter. Your soul will be free. You’ll be able to relax and enjoy life. And you’ll be able to be grateful for what you have instead of longing for what you don’t.

You need forgiveness too.

You’ll be amazed how much easier life will be when you get into the habit of forgiving.
